Team Griffin Racing today announced its second driver in as many weeks for the 2004 ELF Renault House Hammond Clio Cup with Matt Allison (Norwich) set to return to the Leicestershire-based outfit alongside Rochdale’s Neil Waterworth.
With what is, potentially, TGR’s strongest line-up since its 2001 championship debut where owner Julian Griffin (Fleckney) competed as a privateer driver, the team is looking ahead to the coming season in confident mood with expectations high surrounding the newly confirmed driver-pairing.
Commenting on the line-up Griffin said: “Matt took to the Clio Cup very well when he joined us mid-way through last season and the progress he made culminated in a fantastic podium at Donington Park during last year’s Winter Championship.
“He’s shown he has the ability to run at the front and with more experience under his belt I’m confident he can stake a claim to being a podium regular throughout the coming season and maybe even push for the occasional win. Confirming Matt alongside Neil is great for the team and we’re really looking forward to our most successful year in the category yet.”
Allison previously eyed a career in single-seater racing before switching to saloon cars and the ELF Renault Hill House Hammond Clio Cup in 2003 with Team Griffin Racing. During his debut race in the category at Brands Hatch in Kent last August, the 20-year old finished a highly creditable seventh before going on to record three more results inside the top eight.
The Norfolk driver then really came into his own during last November’s Winter Championship where he took a career-best second place at Donington Park, Leicestershire, during the second race while also setting the fastest lap.
